Wi-vun Taiffalo Chiung (蔣為文) was born in Kong-san (岡山), in the Ko-hiong (高雄) county of southern Taiwan in 1971. He obtained his B.A. in Mechanical Engineering from Tamkang University in 1995. He was the first president of Association of Taiwanese Languages and Culture (台語文社) while he was a student at Tamkang University. He came to the United States to study linguistics in 1996. He entered the linguistics program at The University of Texas at Arlington in 1997 and finished his M.A. in 1999. He is currently a Ph.D. student in the same linguistics program. His research fields are sociolinguistics and applied linguistics. Currently, he is interested in the relevant studies of language and orthography reforms in Han cultural areas, such as Taiwan, Vietnam, Korea, Japan, and China.
